What The Atmosphere is Made OfNeptune's atmosphere is made up of 80% hydrogen and 19% helium, with some traces of methane, water, and ammonia. It is the most comparable to the planet Uranus, rather than Saturn and Jupiter. The planet is mostly composed of an icy substance, and has some of the most extreme, violent weather in the Solar System. The methane in the atmosphere is what gives Neptune its blue hue. This is because methane absorbs red light and reflects a bluer color. Scientists know that something else has to contribute to its vibrant color, but they have not discovered the reason yet. Also, most of the gases that compose the planet are found at the equator, rather than at the poles.

NameThe planet Neptune was named after the Roman god Neptune. Neptune is the god of the sea in ancient Roman Mythology. The Romans named the first five planets that they discovered after their most important Gods. When they started discovering more planets, they kept naming them after the minor gods. It is also called Neptune because it is blue like the Sea and Neptune is the God of the sea.

Distance From the SunNeptune is 2,798,000,000 miles away from the Sun. That is equivalent to 3497500 the length of California.
Neptune is the furthest planet from the Sun in our Solar System. Because Neptune is the furthest away from the Sun it is. Usually the further away the planet is from the sun, the colder it is. That is why neptune is the coldest planet in our Solar System. If Pluto was still considered a planet then it would be the coldest because it is further away than Neptune. |
